The name Kowaliga is an homage to a song Hank Williams wrote about a poor, lonesome wooden Indian while he spent a few days on Lake Martin in 1952. While Hank was writing his song about “Kaw-liga” a new restaurant was being built across the street and when it opened in 1953 it was named after the wooden Indian that stood proudly outside.
After his predecessors were lost or damaged to vandals, fire or thieves, Kowaliga the 4th now greets guests in the recently renovated Kowaliga Restaurant, home of awesome hush puppies, the Murphy Salad and “the best squealers on the lake”.
